Veterans Carbon Holdings: US soil carbon programme
The record behind credit issuance on a $1.1 billion programme paying US farmers for soil carbon.
DOVU's role
The record behind every credit issued
Veterans Carbon Holdings runs the programme. BCarbon verifies the soil carbon. DOVU keeps the record that ties each credit to a farm, a verification and a payment, on a ledger none of the three can edit. Anyone can check:
- Which farm each credit came from, and when it was enrolled
- The BCarbon verification attached to each credit
- When each credit was issued, and that it was issued once
- How revenue on each credit was split, against the 55% farmer share
The problem
Family farms have built healthy soils for generations without being paid for it. Paying them at national scale needed three things: a way to verify soil carbon that farmers could afford, fewer intermediaries taking a cut, and one record that farmers, verifiers and buyers all accept.
What DOVU did
Veterans Carbon Holdings chose BCarbon for verification and DOVU for the record. BCarbon's methodology measures soil carbon rather than modelling it.
- Every credit is recorded at issuance with its farm, its verification and its issue date
- 55% of revenue goes to the farmer, and the split is on the record
- Buyers, auditors and farmers read the same record; nobody has to ask Veterans Carbon Holdings or DOVU
“For the first time, the profits from climate solutions are flowing back to where they belong: into the hands of the American farmer. This isn't about asking farmers to change who they are. It's about recognizing the value of the work they already do. When farmers are profitable, rural America is stronger. And when rural America is strong, the entire country benefits.”
